Le projet Last Night a Woman saved my Life prend racine dans la biographie personnelle du plasticien sonore Dominique Dalcan. En effet, l’artiste français internationalement reconnu est natif de Beyrouth. À sa naissance, le Liban connaît depuis plusieurs années une situation de crise qui entraîne son exil, étant encore nouveau-né. Ce projet marque donc le retour vers les racines de Dominique Dalcan, l’occasion de créer sur et avec le Liban, ainsi que le fruit de ses réflexions sur la domiciliation et le processus de construction d’un folklore personnel.
Il est également le reflet de sa démarche artistique qui se déploie sur différents media. En effet, à l’instar de son dernier projet expérimental «Temperance», Last Night a Woman saved my Life est une création transdisciplinaire, entremêlant installation (vidéo, enregistrements audio, textes), production d’un disque et performance live (concert).
Confirmant le tournant opéré depuis sa création Temperance, d’une formalisation plus plastique et spatiale de son travail, le projet Last Night a Woman saved my Life constitue à ce jour le volet le plus abouti en ce sens.
L’installation, sous sa forme présentée au Centquatre-Paris en 2020, se compose de plusieurs éléments : un espace central, composé de trois écrans vidéo-projetés, de quatre points d’écoute (permettant une mise en espace du son),
de photographies et de textes. En marge de cet espace principal, un dôme géodésique en bois, présentant une autre vidéo sur le thème du rapport de l’homme à son environnement, dans notre contexte anthropocènique.
Les autre photos, enregistrements audio et vidéos exposés sont issus de multiples voyages au Liban, de la rencontre avec ses habitants ainsi que de documents administratifs relatifs à la recherche identitaire de l’artiste. Rassemblant ces différents fragments mnésiques, aux statuts différents, Dominique Dalcan les assemblent dans un geste révélateur de la construction de soi que chacun opère, de l’élaboration d’une histoire personnelle et collective, avec la dimension fictionnelle qui s’y rattache.
Cette installation se vit comme un environnement immersif, au sein duquel le spectateur est invité à déambuler, se créant ainsi son propre parcours auditif. En effet, le dispositif sonore, composé de
quatre enceintes diffusant des sons distincts, est donc spatialisé, et permet au public d’apprécier un parcours audio unique au gré des déplacements. Les voix et témoignages s’entrecroisent et se mélangent, matérialisant une narration à voix multiples, à l’instar d’une mémoire collective.
Enfin, cette installation sera activée en 2023 en live par l’artiste, sous la forme d’une performance sonore. Menée en collaboration avec plusieurs musiciennes et chanteuses du monde arabe, cette performance est composée de chants (français, anglais, arabe), sur des sonorités faisant cohabiter des instruments acoustiques du Proche-Orient avec les textures électroniques affirmées qui sont devenues la marque de fabrique de Dominique Dalcan.
Développant une œuvre incarnée par les enjeux socioculturels, les travaux de Dominique Dalcan questionnent la place des images dans la construction et déconstruction des regards sur le territoire (géographique, corporel, émotionnel et politique).

The Last Night project is rooted in the personal biography of sound artist Dominique Dalcan. Indeed, the internationally renowned French artist was born in Beirut. When he was born, Lebanon had been experiencing a crisis situation for several years, which led to his exile as a newborn child. This project marks the return to Dominique Dalcan's roots, the opportunity to create on and with Lebanon, as well as the fruit of his reflections on domicile and the process of building a personal folklore.
It is also the reflection of her artistic approach which is deployed on different media. Indeed, like her last experimental project "Temperance", Last Night a Woman saved my Life is a transdisciplinary creation, mixing installation (video, audio recordings, texts), production of a record and live performance (concert).
The installation, in its form presented at Centquatre-Paris in 2020, is composed of several elements: a central space, composed of three video-projected screens, four listening points (allowing a spatialization of the sound), photographs and texts,
photographs and texts. On the fringe of this main space, a geodesic wooden dome, presenting another video on the theme of the relationship between man and his environment, in our anthropocene context.
The other photos, audio recordings and videos exhibited are the result of multiple trips to Lebanon, of meetings with its inhabitants as well as administrative documents related to the artist's search for identity. Gathering these different mnemonic fragments, with different statuses, Dominique Dalcan assembles them in a gesture revealing the construction of oneself that each one operates, the elaboration of a personal and collective history, with the fictional dimension that is attached to it.
This installation is experienced as an immersive environment, within which the spectator is invited to wander, thus creating his own auditory journey and allowing him to appreciate a unique audio journey as he moves around. The voices and testimonies intertwine and mix, creating a narrative with multiple voices, like a collective memory.
Finally, this installation will be activated live by the artist in 2023, in the form of a sound performance. Conducted in collaboration with several musicians and singers from the Arab world, this performance is composed of songs (French, English, Arabic), with sounds that bring together acoustic instruments from the Near East with the strong electronic textures that have become Dominique Dalcan's trademark.
Developing a work embodied by socio-cultural issues, Dominique Dalcan's work questions the place of images in the construction and deconstruction of views on the territory (geographical, corporeal, emotional and political).
