/////////////

Last February, a wonderful surprise happened on French national TV : Dominique Dalcan walked up the stage of the Victoires de la musique – our Grammys. The elegant singer won the “Electronic album of the year” award for his Temperance project, a collection of songs released in early 2017, written and sung in English – a work of gorgeous density and spaciness, all rocky heights and deserted plains. We were genuinely happy to see him up there, being honored, and we enjoyed this brief moment of exposure for an adventurous, smart and honest French music. And we’re even happier now, because Dominique is re- leasing a second chapter of Temperance.

Dominique Dalcan was born in Beirut. He grew up near Paris, in Noisy-le-Grand, and made his first records in the early 90s, for labels like Brussel’s Crammed Discs. The press described him as a hero of the new French pop sound of that era, and marvelled at his ability to mix orchestral and electronic arrangements. His Snooze alias also gained much success, exploring machine-based instrumental music. Dalcan also produced scores for movies and art projects. After his album Hirundo in 2013, he decided to switch to English and got himself a new moniker for his new art – Temperance. Temperance is mostly about leaving the song form and picking from a large synthetic palette. The output is both visual and musical, since Dalcan created videos to go along his songs, which are all being dis- played during live shows.

This new Temperance album keeps the synth pads and clipped electronics that we lo- ved on the first volume, sounding feverish and serene at the same time. There’s also still this strange, wounded feeling of pride, and lyrics about space, land and boundaries. But it sounds way more agitated than the previous record : oblivion and contemplation give way to teeming, opulent sound design, and a sense of movement and eventfulness. While Dalcan used to slide on soundscapes, he’s now solidly grounded on Earth. There, he can feel dizzying jolts and restless new rhythms and has now other stories and images in mind.In Temperance 2, we hear hyper-contemporary R&B ballads laced with artificial strings, textures colliding, shades from Bali (« Surabaya »), and digital ditties. But the stars of the show are definitely Dominique’s voice and lyrics. They grapple with our world of confusion, but also with the natural world, this sheer wilderness that remains here and there on our planet ( « Into the Woods » , « Mountain Top »). Dalcan also sings about love and fusion in the instant pop song that is « ComeOn Yeah » or the cuddling « Melt Together ». He also tells the story of an empowered woman through the glorious soul vibe of « Done Enough For Your Man » – featuring a video starring actress Valérie Kaprisky. This is an album that shakes many different feelings and emotions together – joy, fury, despair, desire – yet manages to make them sound distinctly and never self-destroying each other. Dominique Dalcan clearly masters the art of measure – the art of temperance.
